Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce a hydoxy group or carboxy group-containing norbornene-based ring-opened polymer and its hydrogenation product.
SOLUTION: This method for producing the norbornene-based ring-opened polymer, comprising ring-opening polymerizing a hydroxy or carboxy group- containing norbornene-based monomer in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst is characterized by using at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of (1) a monomer in which a hydroxy group is bound to the 5- or 6-carbon atom of the norbornene ring through one carbon atom, or a carboxy group is directly bound to the 5- or 6-carbon atom of the norbornene ring, and which has an exo isomer content of ≥90 wt.% based on the total amount of the endo and exo isomers, (2) a monomer in which a hydroxy group is bound to the 5- or 6-carbon atom of the norborene ring directly or through a substituent containing two or ten carbon atoms, and (3) a monomer in which a carboxy group is bound to the 5- or 6-carbon atom of the norbornene ring through one to ten carbon atoms.
