Abstract:

PURPOSE: To execute reaction in the presence of org. cations, such as quaternary ammonium, quaternary phosphonium, sulfonium and iodonium, at the time of selectively chlorinating the o-position to the OH group of phenol compds. by gaseous chlorine.

CONSTITUTION: The o-position to the OH group of the compd. of formula I (R2 is halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, acyloxy, CN, OH, CHO, NO2, etc.; R1 is H, the meaning of R2; R3, R4 are H, the meaning of R2) is chlorinated by the gaseous chlorine between the m.p. of the reaction mixture and 120°C in the presence of the org. cations, such as formulas II, III, IV (Z is N, P or As; Y is S, O, Se, S=O or C; R6 to R9 are alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, etc.), etc. The amt. of the org. cations is 0.01 to 5 wt.% of the formula I and the anions to be bonded thereto are selected from PO43-, CH3SO3-, NO3-, PF6-, Cl-, Br-, etc.
