Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a modified silica-coated metal oxide particle having high ultraviolet-screening effect, free from photocatalytic activity and easily dispersible in a fluid medium by coating the surface of a specific metal oxide particle with a specific amount of a siliceous substance composed of silica as the inner layer and an alkyl-modified silica as the outer layer and converting the surface-coated metal oxide particles to secondary particles composed of agglomerated primary particles.
SOLUTION: The objective particle is produced by coating the surface of (A) a metal oxide particle selected from zinc oxide, titanium oxide, cerium oxide and zirconium oxide with (B) 5-100 wt.% siliceous substance and converting the surface-coated metal oxide particles into secondary particles composed of agglomerated ultrafine primary particles having an average particle diameter of ≤0.1 μm. The component B is composed of silica constituting the inner layer and an alkyl-modified silica constituting the outer layer, not less than 90% of the coated particle has particle diameter of 0.1-9.0 μm and the average particle diameter of the particle is 0.5-5.0 μm. The coated particles can be produced by dispersing metal oxide particles in an organic dispersion medium using a dispersing agent and reacting with a tetraalkoxysilane, etc., by sol-gel reaction.
