Abstract:

PURPOSE: To fix approximate shaft matching status in its early stages by setting up the melting areas of the top parts of both optical fibers to 0.1W0.3mm and specifying discharge current and the pushing degree of the top portions when the single mode transmission type optical fibers are melted and connected by an ordinary method.

CONSTITUTION: Optical fibers 3A and 3B to be connected are opposed on the same axial line and, after setting up a minor interval G, a pair of discharge electrodes 4A and 4B start discharging. At the time, the interval between the electrodes 4A and 4B is set up to ≤1.0mm, the discharge current is 13W16mA and the pushing degree of the top parts of the optical fibers are 3W15μm. In the condition mentioned above, the melting area, 0.2W0.3mm, is very narrow. Since the top parts of optical fibers 3A and 3B are heated and melted concentrically in a narrow area, the deformation of cores is suppressed at a low degree, the concidence of external forms due to surface tension is prevented and approximate shaft matching is fixed in its early stages.
