Abstract:

PURPOSE: To dispense with encoding for area shape and to reduce the whole encoding quantity.

CONSTITUTION: A motion detecting part 3 divides an encoding target image 1 into polygonal patches, and detects a motion vector 4 at every apex of the patch. An area dividing part 7 generates an area shape reference image 8 by area-dividing a local decoded image in frame memory 5, i.e., a predictive reference image 6. A shape motion compensation part 9 divides the area shape reference image 8 into the polygonal patches, and generates motion compensative prediction shape 11 by making the motion vector 4 function on each block. An adaptive motion vector insertion part 12 finds an apex motion vector 13 in picture element unit adaptively by inputting the apex motion vector 4 and the motion compensative prediction shape 11. A picture element unit motion compensation part 14 generates a motion compensative prediction image 15 by inputting the predictive reference image 6.
