To provide a motion vector detection method capable of further reliably detecting a motion vector of a block even an image of the block is displaying an object of acceleration movement.
At first, a motion vector detection method calculates a motion vector for each one inter-picture distance from a motion vector average value of a picture coded prior to a coding target picture. Next, the method calculates a shift amount of the motion search center location by multiplying the motion vector by the inter-picture distance between the coding target picture and a reference picture. Then, the method calculates an acceleration vector based on the motion vector for each one inter-picture distance calculated for each of a plurality of pictures coded prior to the coding target picture. Furthermore, the method calculates a compensation shift amount based on the shift amount and the acceleration vector. Finally, the method defines a center location at a position moved for the compensation shift amount from the same position as the block position in the coding target picture, in the reference picture, to perform the motion search of the block.
