To multiplex an STM signal and an ATM signal and to transmit them with high efficiency.
A multiplexing device consists of a multiplexer 2 that is separately connected to an STM terminal 5 and an ATM terminal 6, a multiplexer 1 which is connected to the multiplexer 2, one transmission line 7 which connects the multiplexers 2 and 1, and an STM switch 3 and an ATM switch 4 which are separately connected to the multiplexer 1. With this configuration, it is possible to perform transmission with one signal transmission line when an STM signal and an ATM signal are transmitted between the same points. This makes it possible to transmit both the STM and ATM signals, also to enhance transmission efficiency and to improve maintainability. Further, an STM signal is transmitted as an STM signal without making it a cell, a special control for a signal that makes an STM signal a cell becomes unnecessary, a configuration is simplified and terminals can be simplified.
