To obtain an N-vinyl formamide propionate useful as a crosslinking agent in a radiation-during mixture, etc., by reacting a N-vinylamide with an acrylate in the presence of a metallic hydrogenat ion catalyst.
This N-vinyl formamide propionate of the formula (R1 is H or methyl; R2 is a 1-20C alkyl, a cycloalkyl, an arylalkyl, an alkyloxyalkyl, an oligoalkyleneoxy or an aryl; (n) is 2-5) is obtained by reacting N-vinylamide, especially N-vinyl formamide with an acrylate. The reaction is performed in a solvent (e.g. methyl-t-butyl ether) in the presence of a metallic hydrogenation catalyst (e.g. sodium hydride) at 0-100°C. By the reaction, the compound of the formula having lesser initial coloring is obtained in a high yield. When the compound is used as a crosslinking monomer in a radiation-curing mixture, a high-performance and a solvent-resistant crosslinked coating material, an ink, a binder or an adhesive can be quickly generated.
