PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal display device having high contrast characteristics although the liquid crystal has a chevron structure by forming a specified polyimide oriented film.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal cell consists of a pair of substrates each having an electrode covered with a protective film or insulating film on the surface. A ferroelectric liquid crystal is inserted in the cell. One surface or both surfaces of the liquid crystal cell in contact with the ferroelectric liquid crystal have a polyimide uniaxially oriented film essentially comprising amine expressed by the formula and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride. In the formula, (n) and (m) are integers between ≥0 and ≤2 satisfying 1≤(n+m)≤4. The polyimide is obtd. by polymn. of the amine expressed by the formula and 1,2,4,5- benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride as the essential component.
