PURPOSE: To decrease smoke while suppressing worsening of fuel consumption by cooling intake air by means of cooling cycle, and controlling/correcting the intake air cooling capacity so as to satisfy a specified condition in response to an intake air temperature and the atmospheric pressure.
CONSTITUTION: A turbosupercharger 8, an intercooler 12 and an evaporator 13 for cooling intake air are arranged in the intake passage 7 of an engine body 1. Coolant of a cooling device 14 provided with a coolant control valve 19, etc., for cooling the air inside a vehicle chamber is circulated through the evaporator 13, and then a coolant control valve 23 is interposed therebetween. The respective coolant control valves 19, 23 are controlled based on various detection signals from various 26-29 by a control unit U, and thereby intake air cooling capacity is varied. The intake air cooling capacity is increased as an intake air temperature detected by a sensor 29 becomes higher. When the atmospheric pressure detected by a sensor 30 is low, the intake air cooling capacity is increasingly corrected by a specified rate.
