PURPOSE: To provide a method for welding structural members where the generation of the cold crack of the weld zone is prevented by paying attention to the hardness of the heat affected zone of the side plate or the clearance (a notch part) between a side plate and a backing.
CONSTITUTION: The buttering welding of at least one pass is executed by mounting a steel backing 3 on a diaphragm 2, and using the welding material of the strength equivalent to or lower than that of the high tensile steel plate constituting a side plate 1 on the surface of the side plate 1 where the backing 3 is abutted, or the electroslag welding is executed on a columnar space part 6 formed between the diaphragm 2 and the side plate 1 after a single bevel groove 11 is formed on the backing 3 and the backing 3 is joined on the surface of the side plate 1 by the complete or partial joint penetration welding.
