PURPOSE: To produce a carbon-containing refractory improved in thermal impact resistance, hot strength, oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance by mixing a refractory raw material comprising carbon and magnesia with the powder of a modified pitch and an aromatic compound, molding the mixture, and subsequently calcining the molded product.
CONSTITUTION: 100wt.% of a refractory raw material comprising 5-30wt.% of carbon having a purity of ≥90% and a particle diameter of $500μm and 95-70wt.% of magnesia having a purity of ≥95% and a particle diameter of ≤5 mm, 2-15wt.% of modified pitch powder having a particle diameter of ≤4μm and a weight reduction rate of ≤30% when calcined at 800°C, if necessary, 0.5-5.0wt.% of Al (alloy) preferably a particle diameter of ≤44μm, and an aromatic compound having a boiling point of 100-300°C in an amount of 2-30vol.% per 100vol.% of the bulk volume of the refractory raw material are mixed with each other and subsequently dried at 100-300°C. The dried mixture is molded and subsequently calcined at 500-1400'C in a non-oxidative atmosphere.
