Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a highly improved apparatus and method for recovering a solvent when preparing terephthalic acid.

CONSTITUTION: An acetic acid-water separation apparatus comprises a dehydration system 20 which receives an input acetic acid-containing water stream from a plant, separates water from acetic acid by applying heat to the input stream and produces an output bottom stream of relatively concentrated acetic acid in water and an output overhead stream of relatively diluted acetic acid in water, a condensation means which forms an output overhead condensate by liquefying the acetic acid from the output overhead stream and water, and a liquid-liquid extraction system 54. The liquid-liquid extraction system 54 comprises a contactor which receives the output overhead condensate, allows the output overhead condensate to contact the liquid extract to extract acetic acid and forms a first contactor output stream containing acetic acid and the extract and a second contactor output stream containing water, and an extraction system separator device which receives the first contactor output stream and separates acetic acid and the extracts therein and produces an output stream of extracts for recycling to the contactor and an output stream of acetic acid.
