To provide a navigation device for a vehicle allowing its present position to be easily recognized and capable of appropriately displaying the present position on a road without increasing or decreasing the amount of data.
This navigation device for a vehicle detects the present position of a vehicle and displays the present position of the vehicle on a map according to the detected position. This device is equipped with a present position detecting means for detecting the present position of the vehicle, an information storage means for storing therein road maps with roads shown by lines, map information for expressing road widths, and matching data for displaying the vehicle position on a map, and a matching means for determining the present position of the vehicle on a map shown by lines or on a map expressing road widths based on the present position detected by the detecting means and on the matching data stored in the storage means. The matching data stored in the storage means for determining the present position of the vehicle on a map shown by lines is also used as the matching data for determining the present position of the vehicle on a map expressing road widths.
