PURPOSE: A new compound useful as a raw material for high mol.wt. polypeptides containing cysteine.
CONSTITUTION: S-Ethylcarbamoyl-N-carboxycysteine anhydride having a structure of the formula. The compound is suspended in an inert solvent such as tetrahydrofuran and reacted with phosgene. The anhydride is obtained by reacting S-ethylcarbamoylcysteine with the phosgene by a general production method for N-carboxyamino acid anhydride compounds. The anhydride is singly polycondensed or copolycondensed with some other N-carboxy-α-amino acid anhydride to synthesize the high mol.wt. homopolymer or copolymers of the cysteine. The protecting group-removed high mol.wt. polypeptide containing the cysteine is useful as a raw material for gels in the living body. The homopolymer or copolymer of the cysteine can inexpensively be obtained by a general chemical reactor and technique.
