Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a non-linear optical device which has a high conversion efficiency to a higher harmonic, and also, abounds in a film forming property, can obtain a large area and has high productivity by using a ferroelectric high polymer liquid crystal as a non-linear optical material for receiving an incident light and generating the higher harmonic. CONSTITUTION:In a non-linear optical device 10, a ferroelectric high polymer liquid crystal layer 13 is provided between a transparent electrode 12 and 14. When an incident light of a frequency omega is radiated to this non-linear optical device 10, not only a fundamental component of the same frequency omega as that of the incident light but also a light beam of a frequency 2omega being the second higher harmonic are outputted from the device 10 by a non-linear characteristic of the ferroelectric high polymer liquid crystal 13. This higher harmonic is separated from the fundamental wave component and fetched by a filter or a prism, etc., in accordance with necessity, and utilized for an optical information processing and others. Since the ferroelectric high polymer liquid crystal is used as a non-linear optical material, the film forming property is satisfactory, a large screen can be obtained easily by a drawing orientation and the productivity is also high.
