To provide a nonmagnetic platy particle especially suitable for polishing materials such as a polishing tape, a magnetic tape and several kinds of functional optical tapes, wherein the particle has a specified particle form and, especially, being an aluminum oxide particle, a silicon dioxide particle or an iron oxide particle, and to provide a method for producing the particle.
This method comprises adding an aqueous solution of various kinds of metal, salts to an alkaline aqueous solution containing an oxyalkylamine, heat-treating the obtained hydroxide or hydrate in the presence of water at 110-300°C. Then, the obtained is filtrated, the remaining is dried and heat-treated at 300-1,200°C in the air to obtain an oxide particle such as a cerium oxide particle, a zirconia particle, an alumina particle, a silicon dioxide particle and an iron oxide particle. Thereby, the cerium oxide particle, the zirconia particle, the alumina particle, the silicon dioxide and the iron oxide particle each having a platy particle form and 10-100 nm average particle diameter of particle platy direction are obtained.
