PURPOSE: To provide a highly efficient nonlinear optical material which has a wide range of the usable wavelengths, high speed responsiveness and low operating input light intensity and can be applied to practical use and also to provide a high performance nonlinear optical device using the optical material.
CONSTITUTION: This nonlinear optical device is an optical bistable device provided with the medium 20 having a nonlinear refractive index and the two dielectric, multilayer vapor-deposited mirrors 23A and 23B between which the medium 20 is interposed. The medium 20 having a nonlinear refractive index consists of thiophene, selenophene, or their alkyl or alkoxy substitution products as an arom. heterocyclic compound having properties of a donor and pyridine or its alkyl or alkoxy substitution products as an arom. heterocyclic compound having properties of an acceptor.
