To provide an ideal storage body for storing hydrocarbon such as methane through a soft-chemistry method using a graphite having a single atomic layer as a starting material.
The carbon-based storage material for storing the hydrocarbon such as methane has carbon layers with a larger interlayer distance than that in a normal graphite, and the layers are supported by a carbonized product of a carbon-containing compound. The hydrocarbon storage material is manufactured through a method comprising steps wherein (1) the graphite is oxidized into graphite oxide, (2) the interlayer distance in the graphite oxide is expanded and (3) the carbonized product of the carbon-containing compound is formed between the carbon layers to maintain the expanded interlayer distance between the carbon layers.
