PURPOSE: To obtain novel substituted azetidinones which is an important elastase inhibitor and is useful as an anti-inflammatory agent or an anti-degenerative agent.
CONSTITUTION: The novel compound is a compound of formula I {wherein R is alkyl; R1 is alkyl or alkoxy-alkyl; M is H, alkyl, alkenyl or the like; Ra and Rb are each H, alkyl, halo, phenyl, OH or the like; R2 and R3 are each H, alkyl, halo, carboxy, alkoxy, phenyl, OH or the like; and R4 is formula II or formula III [wherein Rx is carboxyalkyl or benzyloxycarbonylalkyl; Q is a conjugated bond or CR5R6 (wherein R5 and R6 are each H or alkyl); Y is formula IV or formula V (wherein n is from 1 to 5; R9 is H, alkyl, phenyl or the like; R10 and R11 are each H, alkyl, aryl or the like; and R12 is H or alkyl); and R7 and R8 are each H, alkyl, alkanoyl, substituted phenyl or the like]}, e.g. 1-carboxyethyl[S-(R*,S*)]4-((3,3-diethyl-l-(((1-(4-methylphenyl)butyl) amino)-carbonyl)-4-oxo-2-azetidinyl)oxy)benzoate.
