Title:
OPERATION OF FUEL CELL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH01183072
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To maintain the steady performance of a cell for a long time by supplying a mixture of oxygen and carbon dioxide to a positive electrode and an inert gas to a negative electrode to heighten the potential of the positive electrode than that of the negative electrode. CONSTITUTION:A porous plate mainly comprising Ni is used in a negative electrode of a fuel cell and a porous plate mainly comprising NiO is used in a positive electrode, and a matrix impregnated with a mixed carbonate is used as an electrolyte plate. In the cell assembled with these components, carbon dioxide is supplied to the negative electrode and a mixture of air and carbon dioxide in a volume ratio of 7:3 is supplied to the positive electrode in the standby condition during cell operation. The amount of each gas supplied is 1/15 compared with that in power generation. As a result, the potential of the positive electrode becomes higher than that of the negative electrode and electrolyte shortage on the negative electrode side is eliminated to prevent a decrease in cell performance.
