To make small-sized an optical device which is used for a liquid crystal projector device, etc., and to obtain uniform and high light convergence efficiency by improving the efficiency of conversion to polarized light.
The light emitted by a light source part 10 constituted by combining a main mirror 12a which has its reflecting surface composed of half- divided parabolic surfaces and an auxiliary mirror 12b which has half-divided reflecting surfaces so that their focus are at the same position and arranging a discharge lamp 11 while matching an arc center with the focus is made incident on a polarized light converting element 20. The polarized light converting element 20 comprises a 1st optical element 21 which receives and splits the incident light emitted by the light source part 10 into a P-polarized light and an S-polarized light and transmits one while reflecting the other and a 2nd optical element 22 which receives the reflected light from the 1st optical element and projects the same polarized light as the polarized light emitted by the 1st optical element in the same direction; and the polarized light projected from the polarized light conversion part 20 is made incident on an integrator lens 13a and made uniform to irradiate an irradiated surface with the resultant light.
