In a device case 11, an illuminating light source which is not shown in a figure, a lens 18 for illumination for collecting and/or diffusing and emitting lights from the illuminating light source, an image forming lens 15 for image-forming reflected lights from an object to be read and a one-dimensional image pickup element 14 for fetching an image from the image forming lens 15, are provided, and it is constituted so that the light axis of the illuminating light source is arranged on an optical plane including the optical axis of the image forming lens 15 and the one-dimensional image pickup element 14. Furthermore, a sub-lens 19 for illumination for collecting and/or diffusing and emitting a portion of lights emitted from the lens 18 for illumination is arranged at a position where the visual field of the image forming lens 15 is not interrupted.
