PURPOSE: To produce an optical parallel-series converter easily and inexpensively by providing a piezoelectric thin film to generate a surface acoustic wave even if a substrate is formed with glass.
CONSTITUTION: A parallel optical signal is propagated from plural three-dimensional optical waveguides 3 to a two-dimensional optical waveguide 4. Synchronously with this optical signal, a surface acoustic wave A is propagated on the two-dimensional optical waveguide 4 by the excitation of a crossing finger electrode 5 and a piezoelectric thin film 6. The optical signal is deflected by this surface acoustic wave A, and thereafter, only the optical signal propagated to a grating lens 7 is condensed and is converted to a time series optical signal and is outputted. The converter is produced every inexpensively and is worked easily because the substrate is formed with glass, and thus, the work is simplified, and the production cost is reduced.
