PURPOSE: To secure a easy detection and reading even for the sundry articles by distributing two sets of the light emission device and two sets of the light reception device in opposition centering on the scanning window and then irradiating the scanning beam to each of the light reception devices.
CONSTITUTION: Light emission elements 8' and 9' plus light reception elements 8 and 9 are distributed on scanning window 6 and centering on window 6. Then article 7 is put at window 6, and element 8' is actuated to confirm whether the light from element 8' is detected at element 8 as well as to confirm whether the light from element 8' is detected at element 9 respectively. After this, the actuation of element 8' is stopped to actuate element 9' in order to confirm whether element 8 detects the light from element 9' as well as confirm whether the light from element 9 was detected at element 9. In such way, the light sent from elements 8' and 9' are confirmed at elements 8 and 9 each. And in case no scanning light is confirmed, it is judged that article 7 is put at window 6. Thus the laser generator is actuated to read out the bar code information stuck to article 7. As a result, even a sundry article can be detected and read out in an easy way.
