To provide an optical recording and reproducing method by which satisfactory optical recording can be performed to a recording layer consisting of an environment considering type material with a simple film structure and to provide an optical recording medium.
The optical recording medium 10 has a recording layer 18 formed by mixing a dielectric material and a recording auxiliary material on a substrate 12. The recording layer is irradiated with a laser beam whose intensity is modulated according to information to be recorded, the states of the recording auxiliary material and/or the dielectric material are changed and optical characteristics such as reflectance are changed to make it possible to record information. The recording auxiliary material 16 consists essentially of at least one element of Sn, Ti, Si, Bi, Ge, C and the like and a dielectric material as a base material in dielectric layers 14A and 14B contains at least one kind of material of ZnS, SiO2, AlN, Ta2O5 and the like.
