Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the optical switch which decreases the insertion loss at the time of on, increases isolation and a allows integration to a higher scale by forming a waveguide part and a switch part to the same structure and injecting current in a forward direction at the time of on. CONSTITUTION:The carriers in an active layer 3 have an inversion distribution when the forward current is injected to electrodes 1, 5. This distribution is the same as the inversion distribution in a semiconductor laser and the active layer 3 changes from an absorptive medium to a gain medium. Namely, this switch is constituted by providing the electrodes 1, 5 to a part of the waveguide having a quantum well structure to the active layer 3 and executing switching by inducing the gain at the time of on and inducing the absorption at the time of off. Since the waveguide part and the switch part can be constituted with the same structure, the formation of the integrated optical switch network is easy and the optical switch network having the gain without the insertion loss is obtd.
