Abstract:

To provide an optical transmitter for generating an RZ-AMI signal which has not only high reception sensitivity suitable for a high-density wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transmission system, but also a narrow spectrum bandwidth.

The transmitter includes a precoder 201 for coding an input binary-data electrical signal, modulator drive amplifiers 202, 203 for amplifying the coded signal, a light source 206 for outputting a carrier wave, a first optical modulator 204 for modulating the phase of the optical carrier wave using the signal amplified by the amplifiers 202, 203; a second optical modulator 206 for modulating the output signal of the first optical modulator 204 into an RZ (return-to-zero) signal, and an optical filter 207 for filtering the output signal of the second optical modulator 206, in matching with a predetermined bandwidth.
