Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as liquid crystal element, etc., capable of controlling kinds of liquid crystal phases developing in a liquid crystal state and a temperature range, having excellent electric field response.

CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R is 1-18C straight-chain alkyl; *is optically active) such as (+)-4-(1-trifluoromethylheptyl)benzoic acid. The compound of formula I is obtained by converting a compound of formula II as a starting raw material into a compound of formula III, treating this compound with NaOBr to give a compound of the formula IV, treating this compound with an optically active amine and optically resolving.
