NEW MATERIAL:Optically active compound expressed by formula I [R is (substituted by halogen or cyano, etc.) (asymmetric C) 3-20C alkyl; X and Y are single bond, -O-, -S-, -COO- or -SCO-, etc.; with a proviso that Y is not single crystal, -O- or -S- for X is single crystal, -O- or -S-; A is (substituted by 1-4 F, Cl or CN, etc.) 1,4-phenylene; R'=R].
EXAMPLE: Optically active 4-decyloxybenzoic acid 1'-methylpropyl ester.
USE: A component of liquid crystal composition. Having good miscibility and good stability to light, heat and water.
PREPARATION: A compound expressed by formula II (G is F, Cl, Br, CN, NO2 or CF3; p is 0-4 for G is F and 0-2 for G is other than F) is reacted with a compound expressed by formula III (Ts is p-toluenesulfonyl) in the presence of KOH to afford a compound expressed by the formula I for Y is -O- and A is 1,4-phenylene having substituting group of (G)p.
