Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound, having great nonlinear photosensitivity in a molecular state and excellent blue light transmissivity and useful as a nonlinear optical material.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are H, halogen, alkyl, etc.; R3 and R6 are H or alkyl; R4 and R5 are H, OH, halogen, etc.), e.g. 5-(4- methylbenzylidene)-3N-{(S)-1-(1-naphthyl)ethyl}oxazolidin-2,4-dione. This compound is obtained by reacting isocyanates of formula II [e.g. (S)-(+)-1-(1-naphthyl)ethyl isocyanate] with an α-ketocarboxylic acid derivative of formula III (R7 is H or lower alkyl) (e.g. ethyl 4-methylphenylpyruvate) in the presence of a base (e.g. triethylamine) usually at ambient temperature to 100°C.
