To provide a paper feeder that has promoted a prevention against noises and a gear's partial wear by making a reversing roller shift centering on the driving part.

This paper feeder is provided with a reversing roller shaft 5 equipping a reversing roller 2 and three gears 19, 21, 22; a paper feed roller shaft 11 equipping a paper feed roller 1, an electromagnetic clutch 12 and a two-speed gear 13, and paralleling the reversing roller shaft 5; an intermediate shaft 17 parallelly interposing between both these roller shafts 5 and 11, equipping three gears 20, 23, 24 engaging with a gear of the reversing roller shaft 5 and a gear 18 engaging with the two-speed gear 13 of the paper feed roller shaft 11; a support member 6 with a circular slit 7a rockably supporting the reversing roller shaft 5 with an axial center of the intermediate shaft 17 as the turning center; and a rotation driving source in common with both the roller shafts 5, 11 and the intermediate shaft 17, respectively. In this constitution, with a changeover in the rotational direction of this rotation driving source, both the rotational directions of these two roller shafts 5 and 11 and the intermediate shaft 17 are selected, making the reversing roller shaft 5 horizontally shift along the slit 7a, and thereby the reversing roller 2 and the paper feed roller 1 are contacted or separated to or from each other.
