An external staple device 3 has an automatic staple processing mode for driving a drive motor 361 via a motor driver 40 by a drive control part 51 when a paper bundle S1 inserted into a paper storage part 31 by paper sensors 37a, 37b is detected and a manual staple mode for driving the drive motor 361 via the motor driver 40 by the drive control part 51 when a mode changeover SW 34 is depressed. The external staple device 3 is constituted so that it is usually set in the automatic staple mode and switched to the manual staple mode by depression of the mode changeover SW 34.
