PURPOSE: To phenol resin improved in punchability without detriment to its flame retardancy, prepared by reacting a mixture of a phenol, an aldehyde and a basic catalyst with diethyl N,N-bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)aminomethylphosphonate.
CONSTITUTION: To a phenol such as phenol or cresol is added an aldehyde such as formalin or paraformaldehyde. The pH of the mixture is adjuted by addition of a basic catalyst such as sodium hydroxide or an amine. To the mixture is further added diethyl N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aminoethylphosphonate and the resulting mixture is reacted. The amount of diethyl N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aminomethylphosphonate is pref. such that 13W30pts.wt. of diethyl N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aminomethylphosphonate is used per mol of phenols. When said amount is below 13pts.wt., punchability-improving effect is little, and when said amount exceeds 30pts.wt. the heat resistance and electrical insulation resistance are lowered.
