To provide a technique for producing an alcohol by using a readily preparable complex as a reduction reaction agent and reducing a ketone by a hydrogenation reaction.
This method for producing an alcohol comprises reducing a ketone by a hydrogenation reduction reaction using a hydrogen gas as a reducing agent and by using a complex composed of any of phosphine-containing amino compounds of formula (1) to formula (4) (R1 and R2 are each hydrogen atom, a noncyclic hydrocarbon group, a substituted or a nonsubstituted phenyl group; A is a substituted or a nonsubstituted phenyl group; R3 is a noncyclic hydrocarbon group, a substituted or a nonsubsituted phenyl group; R4 and R5 are each hydrogen atom, a noncyclic hydrocarbon group, a substituted or a nonsubstituted phenyl group; R6 is hydrogen atom, a noncyclic hydrocarbon group, a substituted or a nonsubstituted phenyl group; (n) is 0 or 1) and ruthenium.
