To obtain phosphonomethylated compounds useful as metallic ion sequestrants, complexing agents and stabilizers for bleaching agents from a readily available naturally produced substance by reacting a specific compound with formaldehyde and phosphorous acid.
A compound containing a repeating unit of formula I (wherein n is 50-400) is reacted with formaldehyde and phosphorous acid in an acidic medium having a pH of 0-4 at 80-120°C for 5-24 hours to form a desired compound having a repeating unit of formula II wherein R1 and R2 are each H, 1-5C alkyl, an alkali metal ion or an ammonium ion; and n is the same as defined above). As the optional component for imparting particularly high whiteness to materials to be treated, it is possible to add a fluorescent brightener in a bleaching bath.
