To provide a photoelectric conversion element and a photoelectrochemical cell, excellent in photoelectric conversion characteristics and also excellent in durability (heat resistance and durability under continuous light illumination upon compulsory addition of water); and to provide a metal complex dye used for them.
The photoelectric conversion element includes a laminated structure in which a photoreceptor including a layer of semiconductor fine particles onto which a dye has been adsorbed, a charge-transfer body, and a counter electrode are arranged on the upper side of a conductive support, wherein a metal complex dye represented by the following formula (1) ML1L2XmX.CI is used as the dye. In formula (1), M represents a metal atom; L1, L2, and X each represents a specific ligand; mX is 1 or 2; and CI represents a counter ion when a charge requires neutralizing.
