Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide the picture data compressor in which the compression efficiency is improved and data are compressed with high picture quality by selecting a desired compression method in response to a feature of an input picture.
CONSTITUTION: Input picture element data in 24 bits per picture element are stored in a picture element data storage section 1 by 8×8 picture elements of horizontal and vertical components, and an area discrimination section 3 discriminates whether the area is a computer generating picture area or a gradation or natural picture area. In the case of the computer generating picture, a switch 2 is used to select a reversible compression section 4, and in the case of the gradation or natural picture area, an ADCT section 5 is selected and compressed data are stored in a memory 6.
