PURPOSE: To miniaturize a picture information reader and to facilitate its handling by forming a photoelectric converting element, having a photodetection surface opposing to an original picture, on a substrate and by providing a light source at the opposite side to the photodetection surface.
CONSTITUTION: Photoelectric converter 200 has transparent electrode 21 on glass substrate 20, photoelectric converting elements arranged discontinuously on electrode 21, and electrode 23 and while photoelectric converting element 22 and electrode 21 form a photodiode, glass substrate 20 serves as a photodetection surface. The part of photoelectric converting element 22 is semitransparent and converter 200 is mechanically scanned closely to original 10. In this case, light source 40 of a fluorescent lamp is provided lengthwise at the opposite side to photodetection surface S of converter 200 and reflected light 42 of light source 40 from the original surface is received by photodetection surface S to read picture information.
