Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plane waveguide type grating element which can suppress an increase in wavelength loss due to coupling from a progressive propagation mode to a backward emission mode and be shortened in overall size at low cost.
SOLUTION: This plane waveguide type grating element has a quartz substrate 1, a clad 7, and waveguides 10A and 10B. The waveguides 10A and 10B have an input port 2, an output port 13, an Add port 12, and a Drop port 2 and also have directional 3dB couplers 4 and 11 coupled with the respective ports, core width conversion parts 5A and 5B connected to the directional 3dB couplers 4 and 11, and grating parts 6A and 6B formed between the core width conversion parts 5A and 5B. The widths of the cores between the grating parts 6A and 6B and a no-grating part are converted by adopting an adiabatic structure. For example, a parabolic structure is used as the adiabatic structure of the core width conversion parts 5A and 5B.
