Abstract:
PURPOSE: To solve the problem of the bending by which constituting elements to be supported are affected by forming island-shaped parts in such a manner that the front surfaces of these parts have a relatively large front area in order to support electro-optical material layers and the constituting elements, such as second substrate.
CONSTITUTION: The island-shaped parts 60 projecting from the first substrate 64 respectively have the flat and relatively large front surfaces formed with conductive layers 130 and are arranged in approximately parallel island-shaped part rows 62. Net-like grooves 110 have slender grooves 124a arranged between the adjacent island-shaped part rows and branched grooves 124b extending between the individual island-shaped parts within the respective rows. The superposed parts of the column electrodes 58 and island-shaped part rows formed on the second substrate 66 form data elements. The electro-optical material layers 68 are interposed between the first and second substrates and ionizable gases are housed between the layers 68 and the first substrates.
