To form a polarizing element having increased use efficiency of light at a low cost and to provide a display appliance having high luminance and high contrast by using the above element.
The polarizing element 1 is prepared by successively forming a biaxial phase difference film 3 and a hologram polarizing separation element 2 on the principal face of a polarizing plate 4. The incident light is divided into two linearly polarized light beams by the hologram polarization separation element 2 and each beam exists in a specified direction simultaneously. The two linearly polarized light beams enter the biaxial phase difference film 3, and one linearly polarized light beam transmits through the film 3 while the other linearly polarized light beam changes the polarization direction by 90°. The two beams transmit the polarizing plate and exit as one linearly polarized light beam.
