PURPOSE: To provide a polarizing illuminator supplying either of polarized light components separated by a polarizing beam splitter without exerting an influence on a light emitting body in a state where it is aligned with the optical axis of irradiating light from the light emitting body to the polarizing beam splitter again.
CONSTITUTION: This illuminator is provided with the light emitting body 2, a 1st reflection mirror 3 reflecting the irradiating ligt radiated from the light emitting body 2 and temporarily condensing it on a light condensing position previously decided, and a collimator lens 4 collimating the irradiating light spread after it is condensed by the 1st reflection mirror 3. Furthermore, it is provided with the polarizing beam splitter 6 separating the irradiating light collimated by the lens 4 to two polarized light components, transmitting either of two polarized light components and reflecting the other polarized light component, a 2nd reflection mirror 5 arranged on the optical axis of the irradiating light between the light emitting body 2 and the splitter 6, and a conversion optical system 27 rotating the plane of polarization of the other polarized light component reflected by the splitter 6 by π/2 and projecting it toward the 2nd reflection mirror 5.
