Abstract:

To provide a ferroelectric liq. crystal display of which the memory stability is improved through fast reduction of the antielectrical field formed when an external electrical field is applied by forming an oriented film by using, as an orientating material, a polymer having ion pairs electrostatically bound to the main chain of the polymer.

A polymeric orientating material for ferroelectric liq. crystal display elements is provided which contains ion pairs electrostatically bound to the main chain of the material. Polymers represented by formulas I, II, and III can be pref. used as the orientating material. In the formulas, (n) is an integer of 10 or higher; (m) is an integer of 5-10; X is SO3-K+ or SO3-Na+; and Y is Cl, Br NO2 or H.
