PURPOSE: To reduce the consumption of the nonoxidizing gas by transporting fused glass gob into a forming chamber via a substitution chamber where the air atmosphere is substitutable with a nonoxidizing atmosphere at the time of press forming the fused glass gob in the forming chamber of the nonoxidizing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Optical glass 2 melted in a melting crucible 1 is made to flow out of a nozzle 4 in the atmosphere and is received in a receiving mold 6 in the atmosphere, by which the glass gob 5 of a high-temp. softening state is obtd. The receiving mold 6 in which the glass gob 5 is placed is then transferred via an opening/closing port into the substitution chamber 17 and thereafter, the opening/closing port 19 is closed. The air is discharged from a discharge port 23 to reduce the pressure in the substitution chamber 17 down to a prescribed pressure. The nonoxidizing gas is then supplied from a nonoxidizing gas supplying port 24 into the substitution chamber 17 in the state of keeping discharging the air from the discharge port 23. The forming chamber communicating with the substitution chamber 17 is thereafter kept at the nonoxidizing atmosphere and the glass gob 5 transferred from the substitution chamber 17 is arranged between the upper mold 8 and lower mold 9 in the forming chamber and is press formed, by which the formed optical element is obtd. As a result, the durability of the molds 8, 9 is improved and the shortening of the forming time, etc., are made possible.
