PURPOSE: To provide a device to detect the position of a magnetic pole and so on highly accurately in simple constitution in a position detecting device formed by using magnetism-electricity converting elements such as MR elements.
CONSTITUTION: A position detecting device is composed of a magnetic storage medium 1 having length P of a magnetic signal formed by arranging continuously minimum recording units (pitch of NS) and a nonmagnetized part having the same length with the length P of this magnetic signal and a magnetic sensor 2 having a positioning sensor element group in which MR elements are arranged at intervals of λ/2 so as to be opposed to the magneticstorage medium 1. Thereby, since a position of a magnetic pole and so on can be detected highly accurately in simple constitution, downsizing and cost ruduction of a device can be realized.
