This position detecting system is provided with a scanning light irradiating part 20 for scanning a line-shaped scanning light 22 in a first direction in parallel with an X axis in a Y axial direction 14 at a predetermined scanning speed, and for scanning a line-shaped scanning light 24 in parallel with a Y axis in an X axial direction 12 at a predetermined scanning speed, a light receiving part 30 for detecting a timing in which line-shaped scanning rays of light 22 and 24 in the first and second directions pass through a point position 16 on a picture 10 and a position arithmetic part 112 for calculating the point position on a picture of the pointing device based on a time since the scanning start of the line-shaped scanning rays of light in the first direction until the passage detection of the point position and a time since the scanning start of the line-shaped scanning rays of light in the second direction until the passage detection of the point position.
