PURPOSE: To prepare the titled substance by reacting 4-substituted-phenyl-2- mercapto-4-oxobutyric acid derivative derived from 4-substituted-phenyl-4-oxo-2- butenoic acid and a thiol, with hydrazine, and treating the reaction product with an acid, etc.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I (R1 and R3 are H or halogen; R2 is H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or halogen) is made to react with a thiol of formula R4-SH (R4 is alkyl, phenyl, aralkyl, pyridyl, etc.) in water or in a mixture of water and an alcohol, preferably in the presence of a base (e.g. NaOH) to obtain the compound of formula II. The objective compound of formula IV can be obtained by reacting the resultant compound of formula II with hydazine in a solvent such as acetic acid, and treating the resultant compound of formula IIIwith a mineral acid or an alkali metal hydroxide, etc.
EFFECT: The objective compound can be prepared from inexpensive raw material without producing by-product, and can be separated easily from the reaction mixture.
USE: Agricultural and horticultural fungicide.
