PURPOSE: To prepare the titled substance in a short time, by reacting 2-alkyl-6- t-butylphenol with 2-mercaptobenzimidazole compound and formaldehyde in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide or alkali metal alkoxide.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I (R is lower alkyl) is made to react with the compound of formula II (R1 is H, lower alkyl, halogen, or nitro) and formaldehyde at molar ratios of (2.2W2):1:(2.2W2) using an alkali metal hydroxide or alkali metal alkoxide as a catalyst to obtain the objective substance. The reaction is usually carried out in a solvent such as methanol, ethanol, etc. preferably at 40W150°C, usually at the refluxing temperature of the solvent. The amount of the catalyst is 0.1W2mol per 1mol of the compound of formula II.
