PURPOSE: To prepare glutaraldehyde, efficiently at a low cost, by decomposing a cyclopentyl peroxide compound using a catalyst selected from elemental Cu, Ag, B, Al, Sn, Pb, Ti, etc. and their compounds.
CONSTITUTION: Glutaraldehyde is prepared by decomposing a cyclopentyl peroxide compound of formula I (R1 is H or organic residue) or formula II (R2 and R3 are H or organic residue) (e.g. β-hydroxycyclopentyl hydroperoxide) in the presence of a catalyst containing at least one substance selected from the elements of Cu, Ag, B, Al, Sn, Pb, Ti, Zr, V, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, and Pt and their compounds [e.g. Cu(CH3COO)2, Pd black, Pt black, CrCl3, etc.].
USE: Intermediate of various chemical products, tanning agent, curing agent for microcapsules, etc.
